SUMMER 2018
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. – Eccl. 3:1-8
Greetings Wilshire,
It was the summer of 1967. It was a time of big changes. People of conscience were questioning everything – leadership, the war, social norms, realities of racism, while trying all kinds of things to expand their minds. Well, that is what I’m told. I wasn’t born yet, but we have the music, art, and photographs that witness to the movement. We have people who were shaped and formed during that time still trying to love and bring transformation.
I’ve been wondering what the summer of 2018 might look like for us? We worked hard with each other and Creator to conclude that we want to be guided by the core values of tradition, spirituality, love, and connection. Now, I believe we will strive to do our best to give ourselves to becoming more about those values in ways that impact people, Portland, the planet…. Our first year together was an important season. So now what?
Our next “season” will last longer than a summer and determine much of our future. It is vital that we ask ourselves, “What would a season of living into our core values look like here?” On June 24, we will have our next Core Team church-wide meeting to discuss this very topic. You are all encouraged to be with us as we shape the priorities, begin making changes, and take the risks necessary to live into this together.
You will see some of the next steps already taking shape on the calendar, facebook, and our website. We have plans for more radical hospitality, fixing up a few things, doing outreach at powwows, events, and camps. But it isn’t a movement without you. And, it isn’t a movement unless others are invited and fully included.
What Creator is doing here could be a short season or it could be a long season. The impact, even on people not born yet, will be determined by the people who give themselves to living the values we claim. So, please join us for as many of these opportunities as possible. Get involved, engage, and pray. Invite others. Together let’s practice Connection, Love, Spirituality, and Tradition in ways that leave a large witness for everyone to know about our next season.

June 2nd is the Annual Boy Scout Yard Workday and Church clean-up. Mark your calendars; bring your pruners and rakes to help the scouts. If inside work is preferred, there are dusting, sweeping, washing projects. Supplies will be provided. Hot Dog Lunch with fixings provided at NOON for everyone helping.
The Church Yard Sale will be held on July 6th and 7th this year. See the flyer in this issue. If you want space to sell your treasures, please let Helen Stewart know to save you a spot. Call the number on the flyer if you need help transporting “treasures”.
The next few months are going to be very busy at Wilshire. In addition to the above two events, a Native American Arts Camp for children will be held in July. If you have interest in helping with Native American crafts or providing snacks check in with Pastor Allen.

FINANCE NEWS
Current bills and salaries have been paid. Funding sources, grants and scholarships for camps and other programs are being considered by several committees.
Please continue to add your name to the Offering Envelope if you need documentation of your donation.

MISSION and OUTREACH
In March and April, 205 lbs. of clothing and 46 lbs. of food were packed up and distributed to Mainspring Portland. Non-perishable food for the BackPack Program and Mainspring can be left in the donation box in the Fellowship Hall corner. Food can also be left in the basket in front of the altar.
HISTORIAN NEWS
Helen Iles continues to take pictures at all our events. She archives the pictures, flyers, weekly bulletins, and newsletters in scrapbooks for a recorded history of Wilshire UMNAF.
THE BOTTLE & CAN LADY (Helen I.)
Helen has redeemed $1208.10 in the first four months of this year, 2018. March’s total was $214.10 April’s total $371.10. The proceeds are sent to the Oregon-Idaho Conference for our Shared Giving Apportionment request. Remember tea and juice containers have been given redeemable status. Helen could use help sorting and lifting on Thursday mornings, let her know if you are available to assist.
WILSHIRE SEWING GROUP
The sewing circle meets on Monday afternoons from 1:30pm – 3:30pm. All are welcome! Comfort quilts and aprons are current projects. We have fabric and notions available. If you plan to come, call Helen Stewart (503-282-6431) or Bobbie Edwards (503-708-7865) (we don’t always hear the doorbell).

HEALING NOTES
Our new program: Healing Notes: Native American-Style Flute Music for Healing & Transition is underway! Healing Notes is a service for healing; special gatherings and celebrations; birthing; convalescence (home or facility) from illness or injury; death, dying and grieving; hospice; funerals, weddings, etc. Stephanie will travel to you and play the Native American Flute for you or your loved one(s). The potential benefits of music in a healing setting are calming, soothing, relief from pain, alleviation of distress, peace and relaxation. Reading, conversation, and smudging are also available upon request. All visits are strictly confidential. There is no charge for this service; funds for this program are provided by grants and voluntary love donations. This service is open to all ages, ethnicities, creeds, and spiritualties; it is nondenominational and there is no proselytizing. If you are interested in this service, please call Stephanie at the number during the hours below. If you need brochures, please contact either Stephanie or Helen Stewart of the Board of Trustees.
